X-Plane 11 (2018): what it takes to run it

What it asks of a laptop
Look at the shape of the data before anything else. Across 18 laptops at 1920x1080 on the High preset with upscaling off, Notebookcheck's figures run from 66fps to 124fps. That is a spread of less than 1.9x between the slowest machine in the set — an RTX 5050 Victus — and the fastest, an RTX 5080 Legion Pro 7i. For comparison, a genuinely GPU-bound modern release will typically show a three- or fourfold gap across that same range of hardware. X-Plane 11 does not.
The tier averages tell the same story more bluntly. RTX 5090 laptops average 114fps. RTX 5070 laptops average 88fps. RTX 5060 laptops average 86fps. Those last two are separated by 2fps, which is noise. The RTX 5050 group sits at 74fps, only 14 per cent behind the 5070 average despite being two tiers and a large chunk of silicon down. And the single RTX 5080 result, at 124fps, is the fastest number in the entire set — ahead of five RTX 5090 machines. GPU tier is not the variable that decides your frame rate here.
What is? Almost certainly the CPU and the simulation itself. Flight simulators are notorious for hammering a small number of threads with scenery streaming, autogen terrain and physics, and generating enormous numbers of draw calls that no amount of extra shader hardware will absorb. The measured figures behave exactly as you'd expect from a title that runs into a per-frame ceiling long before the graphics card is saturated. Note that not one of the 18 laptops reaches 144fps, including a £4,884 RTX 5090 machine. That ceiling is real and it applies at every price point.
The corollary is the good news: all 18 laptops clear 60fps. Every single one. The median is 87fps. This is not a demanding game in the conventional sense — it is a game that refuses to reward spending, in either direction.
What runs it
60fps: everything. The lowest figure in the set is 66fps from the HP Victus 15-fa2160ng on an RTX 5050, with the MSI Cyborg 15 (also RTX 5050) at 67fps just above it. Both clear 60 with margin at 1080p High. If your target is a locked 60 on a 1080p panel, the entry rung of the current mobile stack is enough, and the rest of the GPU ladder is buying you headroom you may not need.
100fps: six of 18, and not the six you'd predict. The list is the Legion Pro 7i 16 Gen 10 (RTX 5080, 124fps), the ROG Strix Scar 18 (RTX 5090, 122fps), the XMG Neo 16 E25 (RTX 5090, 120fps), the Strix Scar 16 (RTX 5090, 116fps), the Erazer Beast 16 X1 Ultimate (RTX 5090, 114fps) and — the outlier that matters — the MSI Katana 17 HX on an RTX 5070 at 106fps. That £2,312 machine beats the £4,979 Razer Blade 16 with an RTX 5090 in it, which lands at 98fps. Whatever combination of CPU and sustained power the Katana has, it is worth more here than two GPU tiers.
144fps: none of 18. The fastest result is 124fps. If you own or intend to buy a 165Hz or 240Hz panel, X-Plane 11 will not feed it on any laptop in this data set. Treat high-refresh panels as useful for other games, not this one.
The middle of the table is where the incoherence is clearest. The HP Omen 16-ap0091ng on an RTX 5060 manages 94fps, ahead of the HP Omen 17z-db100 on an RTX 5070 (83fps) and the ASUS TUF Gaming A18 with a 115W RTX 5070 (81fps). The Acer Nitro V14 AI, on an RTX 5050, hits 81fps — level with that RTX 5070 TUF. Meanwhile two RTX 5060 laptops, the Legion 5 15AHP G10 and the Lenovo LOQ, both at 115W, land 20fps apart (92fps vs 72fps). Same GPU, same power figure, wildly different results. That gap has to come from the rest of the machine.
The cheapest laptop that handles it
Of the priced machines in the set, the MSI Cyborg 15 at £984 is the cheapest, and its RTX 5050 returns 67fps — above 60, playable, but with the least margin of anything here bar the Victus. It does the job at 1080p High.
The more interesting figure is the ASUS TUF Gaming A18 at £1,489, which produces 81fps from a 115W RTX 5070. That is a comfortable, roughly 1.5x-of-60 result for under fifteen hundred pounds, and it is only 17fps behind a £4,979 Razer Blade 16.
The best value in the set for this specific title is the MSI Katana 17 HX at £2,312. At 106fps it is one of only six machines over 100fps, and the only one below £3,000. Above it, the £3,662 Legion Pro 7i buys 124fps and the £4,884 Erazer Beast 16 X1 Ultimate buys 114fps — that is, spending an extra £2,572 over the Katana gets you 8fps less.
What this means if you're buying
Do not buy GPU for X-Plane 11. The measured figures give you no reason to: the RTX 5060 and RTX 5070 tiers are statistically tied, the RTX 5050 tier is within 14 per cent of both, and RTX 5090 machines range from 98fps to 122fps depending on chassis rather than on the graphics card they share.
Buy CPU, cooling and sustained power instead. The pattern in this data — a mid-tier Katana beating a flagship Blade, two identically specified RTX 5060 laptops 20fps apart — is consistent with a title bottlenecked by single-thread throughput and by whether the chassis lets the processor hold its clocks. That is not something a spec sheet reliably tells you, so look for measured results on the exact model rather than the GPU badge.
Practically: if you already own any current-generation gaming laptop, including an RTX 5050 model, you are above 60fps at 1080p High and there is no upgrade case here. If you're buying and this title is a priority, the £1,489-£2,312 band is where the sensible purchases sit. Anything above that is being bought for other games entirely.
How these numbers were produced
Frame rates here are not measured by us, and we label how each one was arrived at. A figure marked measured comes from a published run on that exact machine. A figure marked representative is derived from the GPU and its power limit (TGP) and cross-referenced against published reviews - a sound estimate of what that configuration delivers, but not a measurement of that specific laptop. Unless stated otherwise, numbers are 1920x1080, High preset, upscaling off. Where a laptop ships in several power configurations we use the wattage of the exact SKU listed, because a 140W RTX 5070 and a 115W one are not the same product.
