How these numbers were produced
Frame rates here are not measured by us, and we label how each one was arrived at. A figure marked measured comes from a published run on that exact machine. A figure marked representative is derived from the GPU and its power limit (TGP) and cross-referenced against published reviews - a sound estimate of what that configuration delivers, but not a measurement of that specific laptop. Unless stated otherwise, numbers are 1920x1080, High preset, upscaling off. Where a laptop ships in several power configurations we use the wattage of the exact SKU listed, because a 140W RTX 5070 and a 115W one are not the same product.
In use
The short version
The Gigabyte Gaming A16 is a well-specified gaming laptop on paper: an RTX 5070, a 16in 2560x1600 IPS display, a 165Hz refresh rate, 16GB of memory, a 1TB SSD and a 76Wh battery in a 2.26kg chassis. At £1,400, though, the important question is not whether those headline parts look attractive in isolation. It is whether this particular RTX 5070 implementation delivers enough performance to justify the price.
The published benchmark data gives a mixed answer. Notebookcheck’s figures show that the Gaming A16 can be very quick in less demanding games. Strange Brigade reaches 243fps, Dota 2 runs at 159fps and GTA V manages 158fps. Those are excellent results for players whose libraries include older, lighter or competitive games, and they give the 165Hz panel a realistic purpose in selected titles.
The problem is the RTX 5070’s 85W GPU power limit. This is not one of the higher-powered RTX 5070 laptops in the comparison group. The closest RTX 5060 and RTX 5070 rivals all have 115W GPU power limits, and the Gaming A16 is not clearly faster than them in the shared results. Against the Lenovo LOQ with an RTX 5060 at 115W, it averages exactly the same frame rate across 13 shared games. Against the Lenovo Legion 5 15AHP G10, Lenovo Legion 7 16, ASUS TUF Gaming A18 and Razer Blade 14, it trails by a small average margin across their shared games despite carrying an RTX 5070 badge.
That does not make the Gaming A16 slow. Its mean across the five scoring-suite games is 121fps, and the results in Dota 2, GTA V, Baldur’s Gate 3 and X-Plane 11 are all strong. But the broad average masks a substantial divide between games. The newer and more demanding titles pull the machine back sharply: Doom: The Dark Ages reaches 60fps, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle 55fps, Stalker 2 52fps and The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Remastered 47fps. Cyberpunk 2077 reaches 84fps and Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 reaches 86fps, which are respectable figures, but nowhere near the screen’s 165Hz ceiling.
At £1,400, that spread matters. You are paying for an RTX 5070 laptop with a high-resolution, high-refresh display, yet the available figures show performance that is broadly level with, or marginally behind, several 115W RTX 5060 and RTX 5070 alternatives in the shared games. The Gaming A16 therefore makes most sense for a buyer who values the supplied 16in 2560x1600 165Hz IPS screen, wants 1TB of storage as supplied, and mostly plays games closer to Dota 2, GTA V, Strange Brigade or Baldur’s Gate 3 than Stalker 2 or Oblivion Remastered.
It is less convincing for someone buying specifically for the RTX 5070 name, someone expecting modern demanding games to sit close to 165fps, or someone trying to obtain the strongest gaming performance possible from a £1,400 laptop. The measured numbers do not support treating this as a clearly faster choice than the 115W RTX 5060 machines listed below. The Gaming A16 is capable, but its graphics power limit prevents the specification from translating into the kind of lead that buyers may reasonably expect from its badge and price.
Performance
What the benchmark figures actually show
Notebookcheck measured the Gigabyte Gaming A16 at 1920x1080 using the High preset with upscaling disabled. That is an important baseline. These are native-rendered 1080p High results rather than figures assisted by upscaling, and they provide a useful indication of the laptop’s underlying gaming performance. They are not, however, direct measurements at the panel’s 2560x1600 resolution. The difference matters because the laptop’s screen is sharper than the benchmark resolution, while the measured frame rates are the firm evidence available for comparing it with the listed rivals.
At the quick end of the results, Strange Brigade reaches 243fps. That is the clearest example of the Gaming A16 having more performance than a 165Hz display can show in a straightforward average-frame-rate sense. The laptop cannot display more than 165 refreshes per second on its supplied panel, so a result of 243fps demonstrates considerable headroom in that particular game at the measured settings. It also tells us that the RTX 5070 at 85W is not universally constrained to middling frame rates. In games that are comparatively accommodating, it can produce very high figures.
Dota 2 follows at 159fps. That is very close to the panel’s 165Hz refresh rate, and it is one of the five games used in the scoring suite. For a Dota 2 player, this is one of the Gaming A16’s strongest arguments. Civilization 7 reaches 132fps. That remains a strong result and sits comfortably below the display ceiling without being remotely low. A 132fps figure does not fully exploit a 165Hz panel in the way 159fps or 158fps can, but it still means the screen is not excessive for the measured result. There is enough performance here for a visibly high-refresh experience, just not a result that remains close to the panel limit.
Baldur’s Gate 3 records 106fps. That is a good frame rate, but it is also the point where the distinction between “high refresh capable” and “able to fill a 165Hz screen” becomes clearer. At 106fps, the machine is still delivering a substantially higher figure than the lower results in the benchmark list, yet there is a sizeable gap to 165fps. The panel remains a welcome specification, but the GPU is not driving it to its refresh limit in this game at the measured settings.
X-Plane 11 produces 99fps. That is another solid result and the fifth scoring-suite figure. It takes the scoring-suite results into a broad range: Dota 2 at 159fps, GTA V at 158fps, Baldur’s Gate 3 at 106fps, X-Plane 11 at 99fps and Cyberpunk 2077 at 84fps. The mean across those five games is 121fps. That mean is useful as a summary, but it should not be allowed to flatten the reality of the spread. A buyer who mainly plays Dota 2 and GTA V sees a laptop operating near the display limit. A buyer who mainly plays Cyberpunk 2077 sees a much more conventional result, and a buyer focused on Stalker 2 or Oblivion Remastered sees a different proposition again.
Final Fantasy XV reaches 96fps. This sits close to X-Plane 11’s 99fps and helps establish the Gaming A16’s middle tier. In these games, the laptop offers clearly more than a basic 60fps-class outcome at the measured settings, but it does not turn the 165Hz panel into a fully saturated display. That is still useful performance. It simply needs to be described accurately: the Gaming A16 is not a machine that reaches 165fps by default across modern games, even at the benchmark’s 1920x1080 High settings.
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 reaches 86fps and Cyberpunk 2077 reaches 84fps. Those figures are close enough that they make a useful pair. Both are well below 165fps but well above the results from Doom: The Dark Ages, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Stalker 2 and Oblivion Remastered. For someone playing these titles, the Gaming A16’s 85W RTX 5070 is delivering credible performance rather than an easy route to the screen’s maximum refresh rate. It is also notable that Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the five scoring-suite games, so this result has a direct effect on the 121fps suite mean.
The bottom of the list is where the limitations of the configuration are hardest to ignore. Doom: The Dark Ages reaches 60fps. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle reaches 55fps. Stalker 2 reaches 52fps. The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Remastered reaches 47fps. These figures do not suggest that the Gaming A16 is unable to run demanding games, but they do demonstrate that the laptop’s performance reserve is much smaller in the hardest titles. A 165Hz screen does not alter that. The display can refresh at 165Hz, but the measured results show that these games are operating far from that ceiling at 1080p High with upscaling off.
This is why the 121fps scoring-suite mean needs context. It is a useful middle-of-the-road figure across five selected games, but it is not a promise of 121fps in every game. The complete benchmark list runs from 243fps in Strange Brigade down to 47fps in Oblivion Remastered. That is not a narrow performance band. It is an indication that game engine, graphics workload and title-specific demands matter a great deal on this laptop.
The significance of the 85W RTX 5070
The most important specification in this review is not simply “RTX 5070”. It is RTX 5070 at 85W. GPU names are useful shorthand, but the supplied power limit is part of the performance specification. The comparison machines make that especially clear because every listed rival has a 115W GPU power limit. These are not weak results. In several cases they are comfortably above the lower end of the benchmark table. But the display’s full 165Hz potential remains unused. This is where buyers need to distinguish between wanting a high-refresh panel for the games that can exploit it and expecting every game to reach that rate.
The final group is the heavy end of the modern benchmark set: Doom: The Dark Ages at 60fps, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle at 55fps, Stalker 2 at 52fps and Oblivion Remastered at 47fps. The Gaming A16 can run these games under the supplied benchmark conditions, but the numbers show no spare performance for a high-refresh experience. How to read the 165Hz figure
A 165Hz screen is meaningful only when the system can provide suitably high frame rates in the games you actually play. The Gaming A16 proves that it can do so in some of the measured titles. Strange Brigade at 243fps has headroom beyond the display limit. Dota 2 at 159fps and GTA V at 158fps are close enough to 165fps that the refresh rate is directly relevant. The important point is not that the Gaming A16 is dramatically slower. It is that it has no measured performance lead despite using the higher-numbered GPU. The Gaming A16 is not the right choice for the buyer who sees “RTX 5070” and assumes it will decisively outperform RTX 5060 laptops. The comparison figures do not support that assumption. The 115W RTX 5060 Lenovo LOQ matches it across 13 shared games, while the two 115W RTX 5060 Lenovo Legion models hold a small average advantage across seven shared games. That is a serious warning for performance-first shoppers.
It is also not the right machine for someone expecting the 165Hz screen to be filled in every demanding game. The benchmark results are explicit: Doom: The Dark Ages reaches 60fps, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle reaches 55fps, Stalker 2 reaches 52fps and Oblivion Remastered reaches 47fps at 1920x1080 High with upscaling off. Those are not results that match the panel’s refresh ceiling, and they are measured below the panel’s native 2560x1600 resolution.
Buyers focused on the latest demanding games should be particularly cautious. Cyberpunk 2077 at 84fps and Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 at 86fps are respectable, but they show that the RTX 5070 at 85W is not delivering a high-refresh result in every major game even before moving from the measured 1920x1080 benchmark resolution to the supplied 2560x1600 panel resolution. Without published native-resolution or upscaling-enabled data, no stronger claim is justified.
For £1,400, the Gigabyte Gaming A16 is a competent but difficult laptop to recommend purely on value. The screen specification is appealing, the storage allocation is sensible and the best benchmark figures are genuinely strong. Yet the reduced-power RTX 5070 repeatedly performs around the level of, or slightly behind, 115W RTX 5060 and RTX 5070 rivals in the shared results. That does not make it a bad laptop. It makes it a laptop that should be bought selectively.
If the Gaming A16 is available from a retailer you trust, if the 16in 2560x1600 165Hz IPS display is exactly what you want, and if your gaming is weighted towards the titles where it posts 132fps, 158fps, 159fps or 243fps, it can be a satisfying fit. If your priority is extracting the greatest possible gaming performance from your money, compare it carefully with the 115W alternatives before committing. The benchmark data says the Gigabyte is close to those machines, but it does not say that it beats them.
