How these numbers were produced

Frame rates here are not measured by us, and we label how each one was arrived at. A figure marked measured comes from a published run on that exact machine. A figure marked representative is derived from the GPU and its power limit (TGP) and cross-referenced against published reviews - a sound estimate of what that configuration delivers, but not a measurement of that specific laptop. Unless stated otherwise, numbers are 1920x1080, High preset, upscaling off. Where a laptop ships in several power configurations we use the wattage of the exact SKU listed, because a 140W RTX 5070 and a 115W one are not the same product.

In use

The short version

The Asus V16 is a portable, sensibly specified gaming laptop let down by an awkward price. At £900, it offers an RTX 3050, a Core 7 240H, 16GB of memory, a 512GB SSD and a 16in 1920x1200 144Hz IPS display in a 1.974kg chassis. That is a respectable everyday specification, and the measured gaming figures show that it can still play a wide range of games well at 1920x1080 on the High preset with upscaling disabled.

The problem is not that the Asus V16 is incapable. It is that its capability is uneven, and £900 is a demanding price for an RTX 3050 machine. Notebookcheck’s benchmark data shows a laptop that is genuinely quick in older, lighter and esports-friendly games, but far less convincing in demanding modern releases. Dota 2 reaches 147fps, GTA V manages 127fps and F1 22 delivers 102fps. Those are good results, and they make the V16 usable for players who spend most of their time in games that reward high frame rates.

However, the same laptop drops to 56fps in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, 49fps in Final Fantasy XV, 45fps in Baldur’s Gate 3 and 43fps in Cyberpunk 2077. These are not unusable figures, but they are a long way from making proper use of a 144Hz display. They also show the central limitation of this machine: the RTX 3050 can produce a high-refresh experience in selected games, but it cannot reliably turn a 144Hz panel into a high-refresh gaming experience across demanding recent releases at the stated settings.

Performance

The benchmark picture is broad rather than uniformly strong

Notebookcheck measured the Asus V16 at 1920x1080 using the High preset with upscaling disabled. That testing method matters. These are not figures boosted by an upscaling mode, and they are not low-preset results designed to make a budget GPU look faster than it is. They show what the laptop can do at a settings level that many buyers would reasonably choose for conventional gaming.

The results are split into clear groups. At the top are Dota 2 at 147fps, GTA V at 127fps and F1 22 at 102fps. These are the games in which the V16 looks most at home. They demonstrate that the combination of the Core 7 240H and RTX 3050 is capable of producing genuinely fluid gaming, not merely reaching a playable minimum.

Dota 2 is the standout result. At 147fps, it is the only measured game to exceed the panel’s 144Hz refresh rate. That does not mean every moment of every match will remain above the screen’s refresh limit, because the available result is an average measurement rather than a complete account of every scene. But it does show that the V16 has enough performance for high-refresh Dota 2 play at the benchmark settings. For a buyer whose main game is Dota 2, that is one of the strongest arguments in the laptop’s favour.

GTA V at 127fps is also a very good result. It falls short of 144fps, but it is close enough that the 144Hz screen is still meaningful. A display does not become pointless simply because a game does not exactly match its maximum refresh rate. Strange Brigade reaches 88fps. That is a solid result rather than an exceptional one. The lower end of the table is where the Asus V16 becomes much harder to recommend as a gaming-first purchase. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands runs at 56fps. Final Fantasy XV reaches 49fps. Baldur’s Gate 3 returns 45fps, and Cyberpunk 2077 is at 43fps. These figures are important because they represent the kind of game load that exposes the limits of the RTX 3050 more clearly than Dota 2 or GTA V do.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands at 56fps is close enough to 60fps that many players would find it acceptable, especially for a single-player or cooperative game where the main goal is visual quality and general smoothness rather than competitive response. That is not evidence that the RTX 3050 is broadly equivalent to an RTX 3080. It is evidence that a narrow shared-game comparison can be compressed by the games involved.

The Raider result gives useful context to the V16’s limitations.
