How these numbers were produced

Frame rates here are not measured by us, and we label how each one was arrived at. A figure marked measured comes from a published run on that exact machine. A figure marked representative is derived from the GPU and its power limit (TGP) and cross-referenced against published reviews - a sound estimate of what that configuration delivers, but not a measurement of that specific laptop. Unless stated otherwise, numbers are 1920x1080, High preset, upscaling off. Where a laptop ships in several power configurations we use the wattage of the exact SKU listed, because a 140W RTX 5070 and a 115W one are not the same product.

In use

The short version

The Asus Zephyrus G14 (GA401QM) is an unusually portable gaming laptop built around an RTX 3060, a Ryzen 9 5900HS, 16GB of memory, a 1TB SSD and a 14in 1920x1080 IPS display. At 1.68kg, it is the sort of machine that makes sense for someone who genuinely wants to carry a gaming-capable laptop rather than leave it on a desk. That is the strongest part of its case. The problem is the UK price: GBP 2,132 is exceptionally hard to justify from the benchmark data available here.

Notebookcheck’s measured figures show that this is still a capable 1080p gaming machine. At the stated High preset with upscaling off, it reaches 138fps in Strange Brigade, 134fps in GTA V, 128fps in The Witcher 3 and 115fps in Dota 2. Those are good results for a 14in laptop with a 144Hz screen, particularly in the less demanding and older games represented by Strange Brigade, GTA V and Dota 2. The five-game scoring-suite mean is 104fps, which supports the basic claim that the G14 can deliver high-refresh-rate gaming in some titles rather than merely offering a 144Hz panel on paper.

That average should not be mistaken for a promise of 104fps in every game. Final Fantasy XV runs at 69fps and X-Plane 11 reaches 62fps under the same stated conditions. Both are comfortably playable figures, but neither is remotely close to making full use of a 144Hz panel. The gap between 138fps in Strange Brigade and 62fps in X-Plane 11 is not a flaw in the data; it is the important story. Gaming performance is game-dependent, and this G14 sits in the range where lighter titles can feel very fast while heavier or more demanding titles may call for lower settings if the owner values frame rate over image quality.

The 80W GPU power limit is central to understanding the machine. “RTX 3060” is not, by itself, enough information to predict gaming performance in a laptop. This G14’s RTX 3060 operates at an 80W limit, while the MSI GF65 Thin listed for comparison uses an RTX 3060 at 130W. A higher power limit can give a GPU more scope in workloads where graphics performance is the main limiting factor. There is a narrower buyer for whom the G14 remains coherent. Performance

The measured results

Notebookcheck measured the Asus Zephyrus G14 at 1920x1080 using the High preset with upscaling off, with the source dated 2021-06-29. That test configuration is useful because it matches the laptop’s native 1920x1080 display resolution and avoids treating upscaling as native GPU performance. The results are as follows:

  • Strange Brigade: 138fps
  • GTA V: 134fps
  • The Witcher 3: 128fps
  • Dota 2: 115fps
  • Final Fantasy XV: 69fps
  • X-Plane 11: 62fps

The mean across the five scoring-suite games is 104fps. That is an encouraging number in isolation, but the individual results are more useful than the mean when deciding whether the machine fits a particular player. A laptop that averages 104fps by combining several high-frame-rate results with a couple of results in the sixties behaves very differently from one that stays close to 104fps in every title. The G14 is clearly the former.

Strange Brigade at 138fps is the closest measured result to the screen’s 144Hz refresh rate. It is not quite 144fps, but it is close enough that the 144Hz panel is relevant rather than ornamental in this game. GTA V at 134fps and The Witcher 3 at 128fps are also high-refresh results. Neither exactly matches 144Hz, but both are far above the traditional 60fps target and should appeal to players who notice the difference between a game running around 60fps and one running well above 100fps.

Dota 2 reaches 115fps. That is below the panel’s maximum refresh rate, but it is still a high frame rate and gives the screen’s 144Hz capability practical value. It would be unreasonable to describe 115fps as “full 144Hz gaming”, because it is not. It is equally unreasonable to dismiss it as ordinary 60fps performance. The distinction is worth making because gaming-laptop marketing often treats a 144Hz display as if every game will automatically run at 144fps. Notebookcheck’s figure shows a more realistic outcome: the G14 can operate in a high-refresh range in Dota 2, though the measured result does not saturate the panel.

Final Fantasy XV at 69fps changes the picture. At 69fps, the game is above 60fps, so the result is not a failure for a 1080p gaming laptop. It is, however, far from the panel’s 144Hz ceiling. A buyer interested primarily in this kind of more demanding game should think of the Zephyrus G14 as a machine that can deliver a conventional smooth 1080p experience at the measured settings, not one that guarantees very high refresh in every modern-looking game.

X-Plane 11 is measured at 62fps. Again, that is close to the familiar 60fps threshold and should not be described as poor. But it reinforces the same point: a 144Hz panel does not remove the need to be realistic about the workload. The G14 is capable of very high frame rates in some games and around-60fps results in others. A buyer choosing it on the basis of the 144Hz specification should look most closely at the games they actually play, not at the highest result in the list.

What the 80W RTX 3060 means

The RTX 3060 name tells only part of the story. The specified GPU power limit is 80W, and that specification belongs in any serious assessment of this model. Laptop graphics chips are not interchangeable simply because they carry the same GPU name. An 80W RTX 3060 can therefore produce genuinely strong results in the right games. A buyer moving from integrated graphics or a lower-tier gaming laptop would not look at these figures and conclude that the G14 lacks gaming ability.

Instead, the 80W limit sets expectations around consistency and headroom. The machine is built around portability, with a 1.68kg weight and 14in display, rather than around extracting every possible frame from the GPU. That trade-off does not require speculation about cooling performance, noise or temperatures; no measured figures for those are available here. The specification alone tells us that this is not a 130W RTX 3060 configuration. It is an 80W configuration in a machine designed to be much easier to carry than a typical larger gaming laptop.

When a game is heavily GPU-limited, power configuration can matter greatly. But the shared comparisons show why it is dangerous to take one specification and turn it into a universal performance prediction. The MSI GF65 Thin has an RTX 3060 at 130W, yet the Asus averages 4fps ahead across five shared games. At first glance, that looks counter-intuitive. Strange Brigade’s 138fps is close to the panel’s 144Hz limit. GTA V at 134fps and The Witcher 3 at 128fps remain close enough to make the high-refresh display worthwhile. Dota 2 at 115fps is further below 144fps but still well above 60fps.

For games that are more demanding in the measured configuration, the laptop looks more like a conventional 60fps-class machine. Final Fantasy XV at 69fps and X-Plane 11 at 62fps are both playable results, but they leave a large portion of the display’s refresh capability unused. This is not a contradiction. A 144Hz gaming laptop does not need to reach 144fps in all games to be useful. The correct reading is more nuanced: the G14 has enough gaming performance to be a serious 1080p gaming laptop, but it packages that performance within a portable design and charges a premium price for the package. The question is not whether 138fps or 128fps is good. They clearly are useful results. The question is whether those results, plus the 1.68kg weight, are worth GBP 2,132 to the individual buyer.

For someone who already knows that their games resemble the higher-performing end of the list, the answer may be more favourable. For someone focused on games closer to Final Fantasy XV or X-Plane 11 in demand, the price becomes much tougher to defend. The 14in size is a trade-off rather than an unqualified advantage. It helps create a laptop that weighs 1.68kg, which is the central portability appeal of the G14. But it also means the gaming display is physically smaller than the screens on many larger gaming laptops. Whether that is acceptable depends on how the machine will be used. A buyer who mostly plays at a desk may prefer a larger screen even if it means accepting more weight. A buyer who needs a machine that travels regularly may find the smaller panel a fair price to pay for the lighter chassis.

Final Fantasy XV at 69fps and X-Plane 11 at 62fps are different cases. The screen still works perfectly well at those frame rates, but its 144Hz maximum is not being exploited to the same degree. A potential buyer should not see “144Hz” and assume a universal 144fps experience. It would be especially misleading to claim that this is a display for colour-critical work, that it is especially bright, or that it has a particular response-time quality without measured evidence.
