How these numbers were produced

Frame rates here are not measured by us, and we label how each one was arrived at. A figure marked measured comes from a published run on that exact machine. A figure marked representative is derived from the GPU and its power limit (TGP) and cross-referenced against published reviews - a sound estimate of what that configuration delivers, but not a measurement of that specific laptop. Unless stated otherwise, numbers are 1920x1080, High preset, upscaling off. Where a laptop ships in several power configurations we use the wattage of the exact SKU listed, because a 140W RTX 5070 and a 115W one are not the same product.

In use

The short version

The Asus ROG Strix G17 (G713QE-RB74) is a 17.3in gaming laptop built around an RTX 3050 Ti running at a stated 95W GPU power limit, a Ryzen 7 5800H, 16GB of memory and a 1TB SSD. Its measured gaming performance is respectable in older, lighter and well-optimised titles, but it is much less convincing in the demanding games that expose the limits of this class of GPU. At its UK price of £1,167, that distinction matters a great deal.

Notebookcheck’s 1080p High-preset figures show a machine that can produce more than 100fps in F1 2021, GTA V, Strange Brigade, Dota 2 and The Witcher 3. It also clears 90fps in Far Cry 5 and Gears Tactics. Those are useful results for a laptop with a 144Hz screen: competitive and less demanding games can look appropriately fluid, and there is enough performance for the display to make sense in the right titles.

The problem is that the 144Hz panel is not a promise that every game will run anywhere close to 144fps. Hitman 3 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider reach 83fps, Far Cry New Dawn reaches 78fps, and several more demanding titles fall into the 50fps range. Watch Dogs Legion reaches 42fps, while Assassin’s Creed Valhalla reaches 34fps. That is not a small shortfall from the panel’s maximum refresh rate. It is a sign that this laptop is best understood as a capable 1080p machine for selective settings choices, rather than a laptop that can simply be set to High and expected to make full use of a 144Hz display across a broad modern-game library.

The published mean across the five scoring-suite games is 94fps. That is a useful headline because it shows that the ROG Strix G17 is not generally struggling at 1080p. But the individual figures are more important than the mean. Averages can conceal the difference between 122fps in GTA V and 57fps in Final Fantasy XV, or between 114fps in Strange Brigade and 68fps in X-Plane 11. A buyer choosing a machine for racing games, esports-adjacent titles, older AAA games or less graphically punishing action games will see a rather different experience from a buyer planning to play the heaviest open-world games at the stated High preset.

This is therefore not a bad gaming laptop in isolation. The Ryzen 7 5800H, 16GB of memory and 1TB SSD are a sensible specification around the RTX 3050 Ti, and the measured figures demonstrate real 1080p gaming ability. The issue is value at £1,167. The price asks the buyer to accept a GPU that is clearly comfortable in some games but already limited in others, while the 17.3in 144Hz display invites expectations that the benchmark results do not consistently meet.

Buy it only if the games you actually care about resemble the stronger end of its results: F1 2021, GTA V, Strange Brigade, Dota 2, The Witcher 3, Far Cry 5 or Gears Tactics. It is also more defensible for a buyer who specifically wants a large 17.3in screen and accepts that demanding games will need more compromise. It is not the right choice for someone buying primarily for the latest demanding open-world games, for someone who expects High settings to yield high-refresh gaming in every title, or for someone who needs a genuinely portable laptop.

Performance

What the measured figures say

The benchmark data comes from Notebookcheck and was measured at 1920x1080 using the High preset with upscaling disabled. That matters because it gives the results a clear and useful baseline. These are not figures produced by lowering the resolution, activating an upscaling mode or selecting an unusually light preset. They show what the RTX 3050 Ti and Ryzen 7 5800H combination can deliver at the native resolution of the fitted screen, with a preset that many buyers would reasonably try first.

At the quick end of the results, F1 2021 reaches 125fps. GTA V reaches 122fps, Strange Brigade reaches 114fps, Dota 2 reaches 111fps, and The Witcher 3 reaches 104fps. These are strong numbers for 1080p High gaming on this hardware. They demonstrate that the ROG Strix G17 is not held back to a simple 60fps target in every game. In these titles, there is obvious room above 60fps and a meaningful advantage to having a 144Hz screen rather than a basic 60Hz panel.

F1 2021 is the closest listed game to the display’s 144Hz maximum, at 125fps. It does not reach 144fps in the published result, but it is close enough that the screen’s higher refresh rate is relevant rather than ornamental. The important caveat is that 90fps is not the same thing as 144fps. A laptop advertised by its high-refresh panel should be judged not only on whether it gets above 60fps, but also on how often it approaches the refresh rate that panel can display. There is then a substantial middle group. Hitman 3 reaches 83fps, as does Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Far Cry New Dawn reaches 78fps. These are playable-looking figures on paper and remain above 60fps, but the character of the machine changes at this point. The ROG Strix G17 is no longer behaving like a high-refresh gaming laptop in practice; it is behaving like a machine that can provide a reasonable 1080p High experience while leaving a lot of its display’s refresh capacity unused.

X-Plane 11 reaches 68fps. Dirt 5 reaches 67fps. These results are still near the traditional 60fps comfort point, but they provide little evidence for treating the 144Hz panel as a performance target in these games. The system can run them at the stated settings, but it cannot approach its panel’s upper range according to these measurements.

The lower group is where the buying decision becomes harder to justify at the listed price. Immortals Fenyx Rising reaches 58fps, Borderlands 3 reaches 57fps, Final Fantasy XV reaches 57fps, and Metro Exodus reaches 55fps. These are not disastrous results, but they are below 60fps at the stated 1080p High settings. A prospective owner should treat them as a warning that some demanding games will need settings decisions if a steady 60fps-or-better experience is the aim. The fact that upscaling was disabled is important: the figures do not tell us what performance might be possible with an upscaling mode enabled, because no such measurement is provided. It would be wrong to promise a particular improvement.

Watch Dogs Legion reaches 42fps. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla reaches 34fps. These are the results that prevent an uncomplicated recommendation.
