What it asks of a laptop

At 1,920 x 1,080 using the High preset with upscaling off, Gears Tactics is a relatively forgiving game for gaming laptops in this set of measured figures. Notebookcheck's numbers cover 13 laptops, and every one of them exceeded 60fps. The slowest result was still 91fps, while the median was 135fps. That is a notably high baseline for a High-preset result without upscaling.

The full range runs from 91fps on the Asus ROG Strix G17 with an RTX 3050 Ti at 95W to 205fps on the MSI GE76 Raider with an RTX 3080 Ti at 175W. There is therefore a substantial 114fps gap between the slowest and fastest machines, but this does not translate into a difficult game to run at a conventional 60Hz target. Instead, the differences matter chiefly to buyers of 120Hz, 144Hz and faster laptop displays.

The results also suggest that GPU power and laptop configuration still matter, particularly at the top end. The RTX 3080 Ti-equipped MSI GE76 Raider reached 205fps, well ahead of the RTX 3080 laptops, which recorded 143fps, 138fps and 136fps. However, the separation is not perfectly tidy by GPU name alone. The RTX 2080 results range from 114fps to 144fps, while the three RTX 2070 machines range from 116fps to 144fps. This is a useful reminder that these are laptop GPUs in specific machines, rather than interchangeable parts with identical performance.

There are enough overall results to show that 1080p High is comfortable across this selection, but several individual GPU tiers are represented by only one laptop. The RTX 3080 Ti, RTX 3070 Ti, RTX 4050, RTX 3070 and RTX 3050 Ti figures each come from a single system. Those numbers describe those particular laptops, not a guarantee for every laptop carrying the same GPU.

What runs it

For 60fps, every measured laptop clears the target. The entry point in this data is the Asus ROG Strix G17, fitted with an RTX 3050 Ti at 95W, at 91fps. That leaves a 31fps margin over 60fps at the stated 1080p High settings. On the available evidence, Gears Tactics does not require an expensive modern high-end laptop simply to achieve smooth play at this resolution and preset.

Across the whole sample, 12 of 13 laptops achieved at least 100fps. Only three reached 144fps or higher: the MSI GE76 Raider at 205fps, the Asus Strix Scar 17 at 144fps, and the MSI GE66 Raider at 144fps. A 144Hz panel is therefore not automatically fully fed by every higher-tier GPU in this data, despite several systems coming close.

The cheapest laptop that handles it

The fact sheet provides prices for only two of the measured laptops, so it cannot establish the absolute cheapest laptop in the full 13-machine group. Of the systems with a stated UK price, the Asus ROG Strix G17 is the lower-priced option at £1,167. Its RTX 3050 Ti at 95W delivered 91fps at 1080p High with upscaling disabled, making it comfortably capable of a 60fps target.

The other priced system is the MSI Stealth GS66 at £2,688, equipped with an RTX 3070 Ti and measured at 135fps. It is substantially faster in this result, with a 44fps lead over the Strix G17, but the available prices show that it costs far more. For Gears Tactics alone, the measured figures do not suggest that spending £2,688 is necessary if the objective is simply smooth 1080p High performance.

What this means if you're buying

If Gears Tactics is one of the games shaping a laptop purchase, the measured figures point towards prioritising the display target rather than treating 60fps as a demanding hurdle. The RTX 3050 Ti-equipped Asus ROG Strix G17 already managed 91fps, so a 60Hz or 90Hz experience is supported by the lowest result in this dataset.

For a 120Hz or similar high-refresh display, the evidence is especially favourable: 12 of 13 machines exceeded 100fps, and many landed between 114fps and 143fps. The RTX 2070, RTX 2080, RTX 3070, RTX 4050, RTX 3070 Ti and RTX 3080 examples all produced results in that broad range.

A buyer specifically trying to hold 144fps should be more cautious. Only three laptops reached that threshold, and two did so exactly rather than with headroom. The MSI GE76 Raider is the clear measured option for a high-refresh target, at 205fps, but that result reflects one particular RTX 3080 Ti laptop with a stated 175W GPU configuration. The lower-cost route to acceptable Gears Tactics performance is clearer than the route to a dependable 144fps result: based on Notebookcheck's numbers, even the £1,167 Asus ROG Strix G17 has ample performance for 60fps at 1080p High.

How these numbers were produced

Frame rates here are not measured by us, and we label how each one was arrived at. A figure marked measured comes from a published run on that exact machine. A figure marked representative is derived from the GPU and its power limit (TGP) and cross-referenced against published reviews - a sound estimate of what that configuration delivers, but not a measurement of that specific laptop. Unless stated otherwise, numbers are 1920x1080, High preset, upscaling off. Where a laptop ships in several power configurations we use the wattage of the exact SKU listed, because a 140W RTX 5070 and a 115W one are not the same product.
