What it asks of a laptop

Mafia Definitive Edition is relatively forgiving at 1,920 x 1,080 on the High preset with upscaling disabled, at least across the ten gaming laptops in Notebookcheck’s figures. Every machine in this set cleared 60fps, from the 68fps recorded by the Schenker XMG Focus 15 with an RTX 3050 Ti at 75W to 179fps from the MSI Titan GT77 HX with an RTX 4090 at 150W.

That is a substantial overall spread of 111fps, but it is not a case where lower-tier hardware falls below a playable frame rate. The median result is 103fps, and six of the ten measured laptops reached at least 100fps. On this evidence, the game does not require flagship hardware for smooth 1080p High play. Faster GPUs primarily buy headroom for high-refresh-rate screens rather than rescuing poor baseline performance.

The figures do still separate clearly at the top end. The RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 machines recorded 179fps and 171fps respectively, while the RTX 3080 Ti system reached 151fps. Those are the only three measured laptops to clear 144fps. There is then a notable step down to the 112fps result from the Aorus 17 XE4’s RTX 3070 Ti at 130W.

GPU power limits and individual laptop implementations matter within the middle of the table. The two RTX 3070 Ti laptops differ considerably: the Aorus 17 XE4 reached 112fps, while the MSI Stealth GS66 recorded 95fps. The three RTX 3080 laptops span 99fps to 104fps despite sharing the same GPU name: 104fps for the Medion Erazer Beast X25 with an RTX 3080 at 130W, 102fps for the MSI GS76 Stealth with an RTX 3080 at 95W, and 99fps for the Asus ROG Zephyrus G15. That makes model-specific results more useful than assuming that every laptop with a given GPU will deliver the same outcome.

There are ten laptops in the data set, which is enough to show a useful range of current and older high-performance GPU classes, but several tiers are represented by only one machine. The RTX 4090, RTX 4080, RTX 3080 Ti, RTX 3060 and RTX 3050 Ti results should therefore be read as what those specific laptops achieved, rather than a guarantee for all laptops carrying those graphics chips.

What runs it

For a 60fps target at 1080p High without upscaling, all ten measured laptops succeeded.

For a 100fps target, the measured results point to the Aorus 17 XE4, Medion Erazer Beast X25, MSI GS76 Stealth, MSI GE76 Raider, Razer Blade 16 Early and MSI Titan GT77 HX. That is six of ten laptops. However, the 95fps MSI Stealth GS66 and 99fps Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 show that an RTX 3070 Ti or RTX 3080 badge alone is not a reliable promise of 100fps.

For 144fps, only three specific systems qualify in this data: the MSI GE76 Raider at 151fps, Razer Blade 16 Early at 171fps and MSI Titan GT77 HX at 179fps. The next result, 112fps from the Aorus 17 XE4, is well short of that threshold.

The cheapest laptop that handles it

The fact sheet provides a price for only one laptop: the MSI Stealth GS66 with an RTX 3070 Ti, listed at £2,688. Notebookcheck’s measured figure for that machine is 95fps at 1080p High with upscaling off, so it handles the game comfortably above 60fps and sits close to 100fps.

That does not establish it as the cheapest suitable option. No prices are supplied for the other nine laptops, including the Schenker XMG Focus 15, which recorded 68fps and is the lowest-performing machine in the list while still meeting the 60fps mark. Based on the supplied information, the GS66 is the only specifically priced option, not demonstrably the lowest-cost one.

What this means if you’re buying

If your aim is simply a consistent 60fps-class result at 1080p High without upscaling, the measured evidence is encouraging: even the RTX 3050 Ti-equipped Schenker XMG Focus 15 managed 68fps. A laptop around the RTX 3060 result, represented here by the 86fps HP Victus 16-e0179ng, adds more headroom without requiring an upper-tier GPU.

If you are buying around a 100Hz or faster display, look closely at the individual laptop rather than shopping solely by GPU tier. The measured middle tier ranges from 95fps to 112fps across RTX 3070 Ti systems, and from 99fps to 104fps across RTX 3080 systems. Those are small but meaningful differences around a 100fps target.

For a 144Hz-class target on the High preset, the available figures support the specific RTX 3080 Ti, RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 laptops listed above. The RTX 3080 Ti MSI GE76 Raider is the lowest-performing measured system still above 144fps, at 151fps. The RTX 4080 Razer Blade 16 Early and RTX 4090 MSI Titan GT77 HX provide more headroom, at 171fps and 179fps respectively.

How these numbers were produced

Frame rates here are not measured by us, and we label how each one was arrived at. A figure marked measured comes from a published run on that exact machine. A figure marked representative is derived from the GPU and its power limit (TGP) and cross-referenced against published reviews - a sound estimate of what that configuration delivers, but not a measurement of that specific laptop. Unless stated otherwise, numbers are 1920x1080, High preset, upscaling off. Where a laptop ships in several power configurations we use the wattage of the exact SKU listed, because a 140W RTX 5070 and a 115W one are not the same product.
