Anno 1800 (2019): what it takes to run it

What it asks of a laptop

At 1,920 x 1,080 on the High preset, with upscaling off, Anno 1800 is broadly manageable on gaming laptops in this Notebookcheck sample, but its results are not tidy enough to treat the GPU name as a guarantee. Nine of the ten measured laptops reached 60fps, while the median result was 83fps. That points to a game that can run smoothly on a wide range of discrete-GPU laptops at these settings.

There is, however, a substantial 100fps gap between the fastest and slowest machines: 134fps on the Chuwi Gamebook R9 with an RTX 5070 Ti at 140W, versus 34fps on the MSI GP76 Leopard with an RTX 3070 at 95W. The slowest result is especially important because it comes from a laptop carrying what sounds, on paper, like a relatively capable GPU. It shows that Anno 1800 performance can vary sharply between laptop implementations, even before considering newer GPU generations.

The measured figures also do not scale neatly by GPU tier. The RTX 2070 machines average 87fps, ahead of the 80fps mean from the two RTX 3080 laptops and well ahead of the 56fps average for the two RTX 3070 systems. This does not mean an RTX 2070 is inherently faster than an RTX 3080 or RTX 3070. Rather, these results show why buyers should look for measurements of the exact laptop, not just the graphics-chip label.

The RTX 3070 pair demonstrates the issue clearly. The Schenker XMG Neo 17 (Early 2021, RTX 3070, 5800H) recorded 78fps, while the MSI GP76 Leopard with its 95W RTX 3070 managed 34fps. With only two RTX 3070 laptops in the data, it would be wrong to turn that into a universal RTX 3070 verdict. It does show that the difference between specific laptop configurations can matter more than the tier name suggests.

What runs it

For a 60fps target at the measured settings, the evidence is encouraging overall: 9 of the 10 laptops cleared 60fps. The exceptions and margins still matter, though.

For a 100fps target, the measured data is much less accommodating. Only one of ten laptops reached 100fps: the Chuwi Gamebook R9 at 134fps. The next-best result was 92fps from the RTX 2080-equipped Asus Strix Scar 17. None of the measured laptops reached 144fps, so there is no basis here for promising that High settings at native 1080p will fully feed a 144Hz display.

The cheapest laptop that handles it

The fact sheet provides a price for only one laptop: the Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 with RTX 3080, listed at £2,196. Notebookcheck's measured figure for that machine is 78fps, so it handles Anno 1800 above 60fps at 1080p High with upscaling off.

That does not establish it as the cheapest laptop that can handle the game. No prices are supplied for the other nine systems, including several that also exceed 60fps. In particular, the RTX 2070 laptops recorded 84fps, 86fps and 90fps, while the RTX 2080 laptops reached 74fps and 92fps, but their purchase prices are not available in this fact sheet.

What this means if you’re buying

If your aim is a steady-looking experience around 60fps at 1080p High without upscaling, the measured figures suggest that many gaming laptops can do the job. The strongest evidence comes from the three RTX 2070 machines, the two RTX 2080 machines and the two RTX 3080 machines, all of which recorded between 74fps and 92fps. Those are specific tested machines, not blanket recommendations for every laptop using those GPUs.

Be particularly cautious with an RTX 3070 laptop. One measured RTX 3070 system is perfectly usable at 78fps, while another is far below the 60fps target at 34fps. A purchase decision based only on “RTX 3070” would miss the most important finding in this data: laptop-level implementation can produce radically different results.

For buyers pursuing 100fps or more at these exact settings, the evidence is limited. The 140W RTX 5070 Ti Chuwi Gamebook R9 is the only measured machine to do it, at 134fps. Even that result does not reach 144fps. For Anno 1800, then, 60fps is a realistic target for most of this sample, while high-refresh-rate performance needs exact-model benchmark checking rather than confidence based on GPU tier alone.

How these numbers were produced

Frame rates here are not measured by us, and we label how each one was arrived at. A figure marked measured comes from a published run on that exact machine. A figure marked representative is derived from the GPU and its power limit (TGP) and cross-referenced against published reviews - a sound estimate of what that configuration delivers, but not a measurement of that specific laptop. Unless stated otherwise, numbers are 1920x1080, High preset, upscaling off. Where a laptop ships in several power configurations we use the wattage of the exact SKU listed, because a 140W RTX 5070 and a 115W one are not the same product.
