Rage 2 (2019): what it takes to run it

What it asks of a laptop
Rage 2 looks relatively forgiving in this set of measurements, at least at 1,920 × 1,080 using the High preset with upscaling off. Notebookcheck’s numbers cover six laptops and every one of them delivered at least 100fps. The measured range is 100fps to 127fps, with a median of 111fps. That is a narrow 27fps spread between the fastest and slowest result, despite the machines using three different GPU tiers.
That consistency matters more than the headline best score. On these particular laptops, Rage 2 did not separate the RTX 2070, RTX 2080 and RTX 3080 systems dramatically. The RTX 3080 result was 116fps, while the RTX 2080 average was 112fps and the RTX 2070 average was 110fps. Those are small gaps, especially given the limited sample: there is only one RTX 3080 laptop, three RTX 2080 laptops and two RTX 2070 laptops represented.
It would therefore be wrong to treat these figures as a universal ranking of those GPUs. They show what six specific laptops achieved, not what every laptop carrying those graphics chips will necessarily deliver. However, the results do suggest that, at the tested 1080p High setting, the game is not especially punishing for the kind of older high-end gaming hardware represented here. Moving from an RTX 2070 laptop to the single tested RTX 3080 laptop did not produce a transformative frame-rate increase in these results.
The practical limit is high-refresh performance rather than basic playability. Every measured machine was well clear of 60fps and reached triple-digit frame rates, but none reached 144fps. If your aim is a stable-feeling experience on a 60Hz or 100Hz-class display, the measured machines have substantial headroom. If you specifically want to make full use of a 144Hz display at these exact settings, the available figures do not show a laptop doing so.
What runs it
RTX 2070 laptops: both measured RTX 2070 systems cleared 100fps. The MSI GE66 Raider recorded 121fps, while the Gigabyte Aero 17 HDR XB recorded 100fps. They are also the two clearest examples that the GPU name alone does not determine the result: these two RTX 2070 laptops were separated by 21fps. Both were comfortably above 60fps and at or above 100fps, but neither reached 144fps.
RTX 2080 laptops: the three RTX 2080 results ranged from 102fps to 127fps. The Asus Strix Scar 17 was the fastest laptop in the complete sample at 127fps. The Acer Predator Triton 500 managed 106fps and the MSI Creator 17 reached 102fps. This tier averaged 112fps across the three machines. All three cleared both the 60fps and 100fps marks, but, again, none reached 144fps.
RTX 3080 laptops: the only RTX 3080 result came from the Asus ROG Zephyrus G15, at 116fps. That clears 60fps and 100fps with room to spare, but it remains below 144fps. As there is only one RTX 3080 laptop in the data, this should be read as the result for that Zephyrus G15 rather than a guarantee for RTX 3080 laptops as a whole.
Across all six systems, the answer is straightforward for the tested configuration: six of six reached 60fps, six of six reached 100fps, and zero of six reached 144fps. The slowest measured laptop still delivered 100fps, so there is no result here suggesting that an RTX 2070, RTX 2080 or the tested RTX 3080 machine struggles with Rage 2 at 1080p High.
The cheapest laptop that handles it
The fact sheet does not provide UK prices for any of the six laptops, so it is not possible to identify the cheapest machine from the measured group or make a valid GBP value comparison.
What can be said is that all of the named laptops handled the tested setting at 100fps or more: the Asus Strix Scar 17 at 127fps, MSI GE66 Raider at 121fps, Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 at 116fps, Acer Predator Triton 500 at 106fps, MSI Creator 17 at 102fps and Gigabyte Aero 17 HDR XB at 100fps. If choosing between these specific machines, price would be an important deciding factor because the measured performance differences do not map neatly onto GPU tier.
In particular, the Gigabyte Aero 17 HDR XB is the lowest-scoring measured system at 100fps, yet it still meets the sample’s 100fps threshold. The Asus Strix Scar 17 leads at 127fps, but the figures alone cannot say whether its extra 27fps over the Aero is worth any additional cost. That needs actual current pricing, which is not included here.
What this means if you’re buying
For Rage 2 at 1,920 × 1,080 on High with upscaling disabled, the measured evidence points towards 100fps-class performance rather than merely acceptable 60fps play. An RTX 2070 laptop was enough to achieve that in both tested examples, while the RTX 2080 and single RTX 3080 systems also did so.
Do not buy on the assumption that a higher-labelled GPU will automatically deliver a proportionally higher result in this game. Notebookcheck’s measured averages are close: 110fps for the two RTX 2070 laptops, 112fps for the three RTX 2080 laptops and 116fps for the one RTX 3080 laptop. Within this small sample, the individual laptop result matters more than a simple tier-to-tier expectation.
For a 60fps target, all six measured machines are more than sufficient at the tested settings. For a 100fps target, every one also qualifies. For 144fps, however, none of the available results provides evidence that these settings will reach that threshold. Buyers prioritising a 144Hz screen should treat Rage 2 as likely to run well, but should not assume a full 144fps from these figures alone.
How these numbers were produced
Frame rates here are not measured by us, and we label how each one was arrived at. A figure marked measured comes from a published run on that exact machine. A figure marked representative is derived from the GPU and its power limit (TGP) and cross-referenced against published reviews - a sound estimate of what that configuration delivers, but not a measurement of that specific laptop. Unless stated otherwise, numbers are 1920x1080, High preset, upscaling off. Where a laptop ships in several power configurations we use the wattage of the exact SKU listed, because a 140W RTX 5070 and a 115W one are not the same product.
